Welcome to Mammoth Christmas! This is a little site that was dedicated to our holiday lighting insanity that started out a few years ago with a flying Santa and grew into a computer controlled, moving maelstrom attracting over 20,000 visitors in 2010.
Announcement! No light show for 2011, please read on…
It is with much sadness, considerable regret and some personal relief that I must announce the end of the Mammoth Christmas light show. 2010 was so successful and brought so much joy to so many people that word of our little display spread rapidly. This led to a very large attendance with many people returning over and over, again and again to see the lights and visit the penguins. Some clever counting and a little math revealed that we had well over 20,000 people visit by car on our narrow, poorly lit street throughout December 2010.
While more than 99% of our fans behaved, there was a tiny percentage that managed to cause much stress and who endangered others with their driving behavior. A tiny percentage of over 20,000 visitors adds up to a significant number as you can imagine.
I researched many different possible solutions, had discussions with the very supportive Charlotte Police Department and many of our neighboring homeowners – all of whom were supportive and willing to help find a solution. Unfortunately, it boiled down to a personal decision on my part – my December was being spent listening to horns and dealing with incidents, hotheads and irrational drivers rather than enjoying the continued laughter, giggles and wide-eyed looks of wonder that I had become accustomed to.
Many of you have written nice emails or touching letters or even dropped by a card or thank-you gift over the years. Please understand that these thank-you's were received and highly appreciated. I did not build, set up and run this annual show for profit or notoriety- or really for any easily definable purpose! My motivation was was purely for fun & enjoyment… the fun & enjoyment I received from watching, listening to and experiencing the reactions of kids and adults alike.
So, please remember Mammoth Christmas. Santa will still fly and the penguins may drop in occasionally but the "Big Show" is officially retired.
